Your 401(k) Problems Just Started

When an employee leaves, employers usually worry about replacing that person and keeping the work moving. If that employee handled payroll, your retirement plan should be part of the conversation.

Your longtime payroll person may have known which employees were eligible, how deferral elections were entered, and where contribution files needed to go. Unfortunately, that knowledge might have existed entirely inside their head.

Now they’re gone, and the replacement is supposed to figure it out.

That’s how a routine personnel change becomes a retirement plan problem.

The new employee might know payroll software without knowing your plan.
