One of the most common things plan sponsors say is, \u201cWe don\u2019t get any complaints about our 401(k).\u201d<\/p>\n
It sounds like a good thing. It\u2019s not.<\/p>\n
In most cases, no complaints doesn\u2019t mean satisfaction. It means silence. And silence in a retirement plan is usually a sign of disengagement, not success.<\/p>\n
Think about how participants interact with their 401(k). Most enroll once, pick a contribution rate\u2014often too low\u2014and then forget about it. They don\u2019t review investments regularly. They don\u2019t read notices. They don\u2019t reach out with questions unless something goes wrong.<\/p>\n
So of course there are no complaints. There\u2019s very little interaction.<\/p>\n
That doesn\u2019t mean the plan is working the way it should.<\/p>\n
A successful plan isn\u2019t one that avoids complaints. It\u2019s one that drives better outcomes. Are participants saving enough? Are they increasing contributions over time? Are they making informed investment decisions? Those are the questions that matter, and they\u2019re not answered by silence.<\/p>\n
In fact, a lack of feedback should make sponsors more curious, not less. If nobody is engaging with the plan, that\u2019s an issue worth addressing. It may mean communication isn\u2019t effective. It may mean the plan design isn\u2019t encouraging better behavior. Or it may simply mean participants don\u2019t feel connected to something that has a significant impact on their future.<\/p>\n
Good sponsors don\u2019t measure success by the absence of noise.<\/p>\n
They measure it by the presence of progress.<\/p>\n
Because in the 401(k) world, no complaints doesn\u2019t mean everything is fine.<\/p>\n
It usually means nobody is paying attention.<\/p>\n
